Every summer, dozens of Pikachu performers march through Yokohama's waterfront. Here is how the Pikachu Outbreak turned a seaside district into the yellowest place on Earth, and why fans travel from around the world to see it.
Most cities measure summer in heat and fireworks. Yokohama measures it in Pikachu. Since 2014, the port city's Minato Mirai waterfront has hosted the Pikachu Outbreak, an event where dozens of costumed Pikachu performers march, dance and wave their way through the streets while crowds of fans try to count them all.
The idea is beautifully simple. Pikachu is the face of the Pokémon franchise and one of the most recognisable characters on the planet, so why show just one? The parade fills the boulevards with rows of identical yellow performers moving in sync, and the effect lands somewhere between a theme-park show and a very friendly invasion.
A whole district turns yellow
The parade is only part of the experience. During the event, Pikachu shows up in water shows, on stages, at character greetings and across shop windows in the area. Even local transport gets involved: trains on the Minatomirai Line have carried special Pikachu headmarks, so fans can spot the mascot before they even arrive.

Morning is for finding a good spot along the route, afternoon is for the splash shows and character appearances, and evening brings illuminated performances that make the yellow costumes glow against the harbour lights.
A Pokémon destination all year round
Yokohama has long been a Pokémon destination in its own right. The Pokémon Center Yokohama in Minato Mirai has welcomed fans for years, and during outbreak season it becomes one of the busiest stops in the area, with event merchandise that often disappears from the shelves quickly.
Here is what the evening parade looks like from the crowd:
Pikachu fans everywhere
The outbreak is a Japanese event, but the love for Pikachu is global. At conventions from Paris to Richmond, Virginia, Pikachu remains one of the most popular cosplay choices of all time, from simple yellow hoodies to elaborate full-body costumes complete with lightning-bolt tails.
That universal appeal is exactly why the Yokohama event works so well. It takes something millions of people already love and multiplies it, turning an ordinary summer weekend into a memory fans talk about for years.
If you ever find yourself in Japan in August, check whether the Pikachus are in town. Bring a hat, bring water, and bring a camera with plenty of storage, because you will not be able to stop taking pictures.
