Description: The British government now find themselves at the centre of tensions with Emirati officials over the Premier League's handling of Manchester City.

Assessing Manchester City's start to the 2026/27 season Manchester City [http://cityxtra.co.uk] were found guilty of all but one of the 115 charges brought against the club by the Premier League after a four-year investigation, throwing the future of the Etihad Stadium side into significant doubt. An independent commission concluded that those within Manchester City [http://cityxtra.co.uk] had artificially inflated financial results by more than £900 million, while potential punishments range from a points deduction, heavy fines, or even expulsion from the Premier League. City have continued to insist that they will entirely clear their name as they now appeal the verdict, with the case still having a long way to run in the eyes of the club's chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak [https://cityxtra.co.uk/news/man-city-chairman-khaldoon-al-mubarak-on-official-uk-list-of-approved-diplomats] and chief executive officer Ferran Soriano in particular. But away from the situation directly involving Manchester City and the Premier League [https://cityxtra.co.uk/news/etihad-airways-consider-legal-action-against-premier-league-after-man-city-verdict], it now appears as though tensions are beginning to grow between the British government and their counterparts in the United Arab Emirates. At the top of City's ownership is Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the brother of the UAE’s president, while chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak is also chief executive officer and managing director of Mubadala Investment Company - a state-owned global investment firm that acts as one of the sovereign wealth funds of the government of Abu Dhabi. UAE officials reportedly consider the Premier League’s actions to have an influence on the bilateral state relationship, while UK government officials are equally frustrated by the conduct of their counterparts in the Middle-East in relation to the scandal itself. From within the British government, it is suggested that there is a belief that some in Abu Dhabi must have been aware of the extent of Manchester City’s wrongdoing. WARNING COMES AT PRECARIOUS TIME FOR ALL PARTIES Additional reporting from Bloomberg [https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-10-02/man-city-verdict-puts-uk-uae-diplomatic-relations-under-strain] reveals that the frustration from both sides comes at a 'crucial time' for UK-UAE relations, with the current investment partnership up for discussion ahead of an Abu Dhabi summit held in London later this month. British officials are said to be 'eager' to secure more commitments, with the original five-year agreement seeing the aforementioned Mubadala committing £10 billion to British industries - though the total has reached nearly £30 billion. WHAT HAS THE UK GOVERNMENT SAID PUBLICLY ON MAN CITY? Discussing the situation with BBC News, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said, "I'd be really concerned to lose them", amid the prospect of Manchester City's owners being forced to sell the club as a result of their wrongdoing in the Premier League. "They’ve been such a huge partner in the building of modern Manchester. Obviously, the building of Manchester City into the global force that it is," Burnham added. "I can’t intervene more in the process. It'd be wrong to do that. It'd be wrong to jump to a conclusion before having really studied all the detail, but obviously it’s ongoing, and because it’s still contested by Manchester City, I think it’s right that I don’t say much more." [https://cityxtra.co.uk/news/uk-prime-minister-andy-burnham-admits-concern-over-prospect-of-losing-man-city-owners] Reflecting on his dealings with Manchester City's owners during his time as the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Burnham admitted, “I do actually thank the City Football Group and the wider ownership for the money that they didn’t just put into the Etihad [Stadium] and the campus around it, but also into the city." However, in light of outrage from the wider public over the nature of Andy Burnham's comments, a spokesperson from Downing Street issued a statement to clarify the Prime Minister's words. “As the Prime Minister [Andy Burnham] made clear, the initial judgement is serious and there can’t be any suggestion that anyone is above the rules," a statement read. "He also stressed it's an ongoing independent process. It's essential it's allowed to run its course and the outcome respected. Wherever wrongdoing is established, those responsible should face the appropriate consequences."
