Description: Merseyside Police have confirmed that an "appropriate policing operation" will be in place for Sunday's Premier League fixture between Liverpool and Manchester City at Anfield.

Liverpool vs Manchester City will be a cagey affair in the backdrop of last week's news. Manchester City [https://cityxtra.co.uk/] travel to Merseyside for the first time since an independent commission declared the club guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules on 114 counts between 2009 and 2018. The verdict, published on September 29, has dominated football's agenda and drawn widespread public reaction - a backdrop that elevates the profile and sensitivity of the fixture considerably beyond a standard top-of-the-table clash. City have vehemently denied the commission's findings and filed a comprehensive formal appeal [https://cityxtra.co.uk/news/manchester-city-confirm-comprehensive-appeal-against-premier-league-opinion-and-verdict] on October 1, with proceedings before an independent Appeal Board set to commence in the coming weeks before any potential sanctions are considered. Enzo Maresca's side enter the trip to Anfield having won their first five Premier League games of the 2026/27 season, with Sunday's fixture carrying significant weight both in the title race and in the context of the ongoing legal proceedings. Liverpool [https://roundtable.io/sports/soccer/premier-league/liverpool] and Andoni Iraola will host a Manchester City squad whose mood around the Etihad Stadium has, by multiple accounts, been affected by the verdict - though Maresca addressed his players for the first time since September 29 on Thursday and is set to face the media on Friday to preview the match. The policing confirmation comes as authorities prepare for the heightened atmosphere that the verdict news is expected to generate among supporters of both clubs at Anfield on Sunday. Match Officials: Chris Kavanagh to referee Liverpool vs Man City (Premier League) [https://deweb-519a7.b-cdn.net/post-images/48a9db0d-3876-48cc-8b35-181fa7e937d8.jpeg] Match Officials: Chris Kavanagh to referee Liverpool vs Man City (Premier League) Chris Kavanagh is the referee appointed to Manchester City's clash against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday afternoon, the Premier League have confirmed. [https://cityxtra.co.uk/match-coverage/match-officials-chris-kavanagh-to-referee-liverpool-vs-manchester-city-premier-league] REPORT: MERSEYSIDE POLICE CONFIRM SECURITY ARRANGEMENTS FOR HIGH-PROFILE FIXTURE As reported by The Times' Paul Hirst [https://www.thetimes.com/sport/football/], Merseyside Police have stated that an appropriate policing operation will be in place for the Liverpool versus Manchester City [https://cityxtra.co.uk/] fixture at Anfield on Sunday. The specific details of the operation have not been disclosed, with the phrasing of the confirmation in line with standard pre-match communication from regional forces ahead of high-profile games. The timing of the statement - in the week of Manchester City's first match since the guilty verdict - reflects the elevated security and crowd-management considerations that come with a fixture of this nature and significance. Manchester City [https://cityxtra.co.uk/]'s last outing was a 5-3 home win over Sunderland [https://roundtable.io/sports/soccer/premier-league/sunderland] at the Etihad Stadium before the international break, a result that took Maresca's side to five wins from five in the Premier League. The new-look midfield of Enzo Fernandez, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Elliot Anderson - brought in at a combined cost north of £320 million to replace Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Tijjani Reijnders in the summer - has impressed across those early league outings. City are seven wins from seven in all competitions since August's 3-0 Community Shield defeat to Arsenal [https://roundtable.io/sports/soccer/premier-league/arsenal] in Wales, a run that underlines the solidity of Maresca's start despite the cloud of the guilty verdict hanging over the club. The verdict news is understood to have darkened the mood at the Etihad Stadium, though matters on the pitch rather than in the legal proceedings are expected to provide the more immediate focus once the squad returns to training. Whether the backdrop of the charges and the appeal process will affect the atmosphere inside Anfield - where City's travelling support will be present in the away end - is among the factors Merseyside Police will have factored into their planning for Sunday's match. Maresca's side face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday before returning to the Etihad Stadium three days later to host Paris Saint-Germain [https://roundtable.io/sports/soccer/ligue-1/paris-st-germain] in the UEFA Champions League - a double-header that will define much of the early October narrative around Manchester City's 2026/27 campaign.
